EXSEC / Enhanced AI, a Google prototype based on James’ work, explores a little deeper into each user’s mobile to find cues on what the network is all about. Google launched an internal beta test of this AI system in 2015. By last December, James said about 10 000 people were engaging the system to handle their incoming phone messages.
James himself was one of the testers, such as, while we were talking in his office in Manhattan, New York, EXSEC silently handle one of the phone messages after another. First it checks whether the sender is listed in James’ address book, the company directory and its log of people called recently. Tracing these sources, it tries to deduce the relationship: family members, colleagues or people he called earlier at which date. If the sender cannot be found, the system will automatically send a message to the sender’s mobile that James is in meeting and won’t be available until 11:00am. The system is able to scan James’ diary and calendar and thus reschedule a time slot that is available for both to call by phone. E-mail messages get a similar screening. When James is out of office, EXSEC automatically forwards selected senders’ information to a list shown on cellphone – unless his diary and other evidences suggest that he is in meeting.
